Sighting in Benesse, October 10, 2011

Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on October 10, 2011 in Benesse (Landes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 6:20 a.m., a motorist noticed an orange-colored ball moving across the sky and photographed it. The glowing object alternately climbed and descended as it moved. The witness heard no sound during the sighting, and no one else reported seeing it.

The investigation showed the witness videos, photos and articles about Thai lanterns. After looking at them, the witness considered this explanation likely. GEIPAN also adopted it, even though such an early-morning sighting is unusual for this kind of object. The weather, with very light and unstable wind, was consistent with this hypothesis. The case was classified B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
