Sighting in Biarritz, December 9, 2007

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on December 9, 2007 in Biarritz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a weather phenomenon (storm, lightning, cloud…) (class A).

What happened

An amateur photographer took a burst of pictures during a weekend in Biarritz. When they looked through the photos afterwards, they found unexpected objects in the images. Nothing unusual had been noticed with the naked eye while the pictures were being taken; the objects were only spotted later, on the photographs.

The investigation treated this as a typical case of a small object passing very close to the camera. Here, sea spray caused brief spots to appear on the series of photos. Birds are probably also visible in the distance. GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified): the spots are explained by sea spray.
