Sighting in Bischwiller, June 22, 1976

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on June 22, 1976 in Bischwiller (Bas-Rhin, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 10:15 p.m., several people travelling by car noticed a red light very high in the sky. It moved quickly and silently, which intrigued them. According to their account, it first hung motionless above the oil terminal, then passed over the Herrlisheim-Drusenheim refinery before heading off toward the Rhine and Germany.

One of the witnesses took several photographs, but the film turned out to be unusable. Two refinery employees said they had seen a bright object from their homes, in the east-north-east direction given by the first witness. However, none of the guards on duty at the refinery saw any object above the site.

No further information was gathered. GEIPAN concluded that the sighting was of a red light passing at high altitude, and classified the case C because of insufficient data.
