Sighting in Willgottheim, June 25, 2014

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on June 25, 2014 in Willgottheim (Bas-Rhin, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness saw several luminous objects with a slightly orange tint in the night sky. Over a few minutes, on a weekend night, the objects crossed the sky along the same paths. A trail was visible behind them. The witness described two different kinds of movement.

The GEIPAN investigation found the sighting strongly reminiscent of Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party; the trail could have been smoke from the burner. According to Meteociel, the wind was very light, blowing from the north to north-east. Only one of the two movements described fits this wind. The other might be explained by slightly different winds at altitude, which is possible when the wind is very light, but remains hypothetical.

Despite the many features shared with Thai lanterns, these complex movements leave some doubt about the nature of the phenomenon. GEIPAN classified the case as C, because of insufficient information and a lack of corroboration.
