Sighting in Bogny-sur-Meuse, January 9, 1994

Ardennes, Grand Est, France

Sighting on January 9, 1994 in Bogny-sur-Meuse (Ardennes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 7:45 p.m., the front-seat passenger of a car noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky that caught their attention. On several occasions, from different spots along the journey, they saw a shape that was first rectangular, then diamond-shaped, and finally oval, carrying lights of various colors (white, red and orange). No particular noise was heard. The witness suddenly became frightened because the shape seemed to be moving toward them.

The witness then went to the gendarmerie. The driver, who had not been able to make all the same observations, confirmed the passenger's account orally. The driver said they had seen the phenomenon only at the third observation point and never afterward. They gave and signed no statement, and the gendarmerie investigation gathered no other testimony or information.

GEIPAN re-examined the case, which had previously been classified D. Many basic elements are missing for each phase: direction or reference point, elevation above the horizon, duration, and angular size. It is not known whether what the driver saw matches what the passenger saw, and the passenger had not shared the second sighting, at the fifth point, with the driver. The reliability of the testimony is too low to build a hypothesis or draw a conclusion. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for lack of reliable information.
