Sighting in Bois-Guillaume, November 7, 2008

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on November 7, 2008 in Bois-Guillaume (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At about 6:25 pm on a November evening, a witness was waiting for their partner so they could go out to a show. They stepped outside to look at the sky and noticed two unusual, motionless points of light in the east. When their partner arrived, the two lights slowly went out. The sighting lasted a few minutes.

The investigation found that two weather balloons at high altitude could easily look like this. The sighting took place roughly an hour after sunset, and at that height balloons are still lit by the sun, so their simultaneous disappearance would match them entering the Earth's shadow. This hypothesis, though entirely plausible, could not be confirmed by GEIPAN, as too much time had passed since the events. The case was classified B: probable sighting of two weather balloons.
