Sighting in Bois-Guillaume, October 22, 2011

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on October 22, 2011 in Bois-Guillaume (Seine-Maritime, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Between 9:20 and 9:30 p.m., a witness at home saw an orange glow drift slowly and silently past at low altitude. They likened it to street lighting. A few seconds later a second glow appeared. Both phenomena eventually vanished into the clouds. The witness ruled out Chinese lanterns, saying they had already seen some up close. No other testimony was collected.

According to the investigation, the witness's description fits two Thai lanterns very well: orange color, movement in the direction of the wind (20 to 30 km/h, from southeast to northwest), no noise, and a Saturday night. The witness nevertheless rejected that explanation. With no further evidence available, the GEIPAN classified the case C, meaning there was not enough data to reach a conclusion, while clearly favoring the flying lantern hypothesis.
