Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on September 8, 2008 in Bollène (Vaucluse, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

Shortly after midnight, a witness who was in their garden noticed luminous objects moving across the sky and photographed them. About thirty objects passed by in all.

The witness later looked at recent photos of confirmed Thai lantern releases and saw that what they had observed looked very similar. GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified), concluding that Thai lanterns were highly likely to be the explanation.
