Sighting in Boulaur, March 24, 1984

What happened
On a Saturday morning, starting at 5:50, five nuns at a convent watched an object in the still-dark sky for about ten minutes. It was oval, very bright, and moved quickly and silently, going from left to right and from bottom to top according to the initial report. The GEIPAN summary describes movements from right to left and from top to bottom, in a cloudy sky. The witnesses eventually stopped watching to go back to their activities, and the object was still visible toward the east at that point.
The case is consistent, with five witnesses and a fairly precise description, and the sincerity and credibility of the witnesses were never questioned. It belongs to a group of observations that are now being re-examined. The duration, shape, size and color closely match a skytracer-type light display. A Saturday morning is a typical day for using such a device, and the clouds could have reflected its beams. However, this hypothesis could not be verified: the sighting was a one-off, with no other observers known among the witnesses or their neighbors, and the discotheques of the time could no longer be consulted. GEIPAN considers that the witnesses' perception was not the issue, but rather their interpretation, shaped by surprise and by seeing, at night, an artificial device that was new at the time. The case, of low strangeness, is classified C for lack of corroboration, even though it resembles a mistaken identification of a skytracer.
