Sighting in Bruguières, July 19, 2014

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 19, 2014 in Bruguières (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

The witness was sitting on their terrace when they noticed three orange circles drifting slowly across the night sky. They passed without a sound and took a few minutes to cross, all following the same path. They came from the south-east, from the direction of Gratentour.

The next day, the press published a photo of a phenomenon seen at Gratentour, and it matched what the witness had observed. The investigation linked these elements to a release of Thai lanterns, probably launched nearby at the end of a private party on a weekend night. The direction of travel fits the south-east wind recorded at Toulouse-Blagnac (a south wind at Montauban). GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
