Sighting in Bruguières, November 12, 2022

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on November 12, 2022 in Bruguières (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

One evening, two residents saw a luminous phenomenon with a halo cross the night sky quickly, for just a few seconds. Both described it as orange, with a dim light that was "soft and diffuse". One witness called its shape circular, even "circular/hexagonal", and said it followed a straight path. The other saw it as circular and very fast, and described more complex movements: a half-turn in both directions, then three slight zigzags overhead, followed by a climbing turn to the left. Neither mentioned a light trail, only the halo. There is no photo and no free-form account.

GEIPAN rated the case as moderately strange and fairly consistent, since it rests on two witnesses. It classified the case B: probably a meteor. The short duration, high speed, circular shape, orange color and low brightness all fit this explanation. The word "hexagonal" fits less well, but the brevity of the sighting may have kept the witnesses from making out fine details. The lack of a trail is possible for a meteor under certain viewing conditions. No fireball in the American Meteor Society or FRIPON databases matched, but the object was faint and may not have been observed or reported. The FRIPON cameras, tuned to ignore ordinary meteors because they are so frequent, could not have recorded it.
