Sighting in Buchy, August 14, 1980

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on August 14, 1980 in Buchy (Seine-Maritime, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 4:45 in the morning, several witnesses noticed a light source low on the horizon. It gave off a flickering yellow light and seemed to move very slowly. They watched it for several minutes, after which it vanished, its brightness and size shrinking gradually until it disappeared.

The gendarmerie investigation turned up other witnesses. GEIPAN concluded that what they saw was probably the planet Mercury, which is especially easy to see at that time of year. The case is classified B, probably identified.
