Sighting in Canteleu, July 18, 2010

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on July 18, 2010 in Canteleu (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

The witness, who filled in a questionnaire, described several bright points that were elongated in shape and dark in colour. They first watched them through binoculars, then with the naked eye, looking toward the south. The first object was to the witness's left and moved toward the east, and the other objects went the same way. The witness also kept the impression of a grey trail.

The sighting took place on a Sunday morning in July. According to GEIPAN, these characteristics and the date suggest a group of party balloons lit by the sun. The direction the objects took is consistent with the wind direction at the time. The grey trail was most likely caused by visual persistence. The case was classified B: the witness probably saw balloons drifting past.
