Sighting in La Graverie, May 21, 2008

Calvados, Normandie, France

Sighting on May 21, 2008 in La Graverie (Calvados, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness gave a brief account of what they saw at about 11 p.m. while in their garden. A "small sun" crossed the sky in a straight line from southwest to northeast, at roughly 30° above the horizon. Its speed stayed constant. The object then headed east and quickly disappeared.

The investigation found that the account is not particularly strange and is reminiscent of a Thai lantern, a flying lantern carried by the wind. However, it is too brief to be tested rigorously against the usual explanations for misidentification. Weather stations around the area recorded conflicting wind directions, which a front visible in weather satellite images accounts for. The exact weather at the observation site is unknown, as the nearest station is in Caen, 50 km to the northeast.

GEIPAN classified the case as C because of insufficient information.
