Sighting in Cassis, October 9, 1977

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on October 9, 1977 in Cassis (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 7:15 p.m., two soldiers on guard duty noticed an oval-shaped object in the sky, moving from north to south. It rose and descended slowly, leaving a phosphorescent trail behind it. The two witnesses heard no sound at any point during the sighting, which lasted between five and seven minutes.

The investigation noted that a similar sighting had been reported a few years earlier, and that on that occasion the objects were weather balloons launched from Istres air base. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had observed the passage of a luminous object with a phosphorescent trail. The case is classified C, meaning the data are insufficient to reach a firmer conclusion.
