Sighting in Cassis-Carnoux, November 4, 1976

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on November 4, 1976 in Cassis-Carnoux (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 9:45 p.m., several witnesses watched a triangular object move slowly and silently across the sky. It was traveling along the Marseille – La Ciotat line. It looked slightly larger than an airliner, with a red light at the front and a white glow at the rear.

The investigation noted that, during several night shifts, the gendarmerie had recorded the passage of a fairly large airliner between about 9:30 and 10:00 p.m., following the same route as the object the witnesses described. GEIPAN therefore concluded that the witnesses had probably seen an aircraft passing by, and the case was classified B (probably identified).
