Sighting in Castetnau-Camblong, July 15, 1979

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on July 15, 1979 in Castetnau-Camblong (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The witness reported this memory in 2011, describing a much older sighting whose exact year and month they could not recall. It took place in 1979 or 1980, between mid-July and mid-August, in the late afternoon. The date recorded in the file was chosen arbitrarily.

The witness was looking at the landscape through an astronomical telescope when a motionless object caught their attention. It was triangular and a light orange-rust color. A haze, then a cloud, quickly hid it, and the sighting lasted less than 30 seconds.

The triangular shape and the very slight movement suggested a tetrahedral balloon. Some weather balloons are orange-brown, close to the rust color described. However, the surface details given by the witness fit poorly with this explanation. Because the exact date was unknown, Météo-France and the CNES could not check the winds or any balloon launches. For lack of precise information, the GEIPAN classified the case as C.
