Sighting in Caussade, July 31, 2011

Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 31, 2011 in Caussade (Tarn-et-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

A witness saw a phenomenon cross the sky very quickly at around 7:30 pm. It was oval and white. It moved without making any audible sound, then disappeared swiftly toward the horizon.

The speed and brightness of the phenomenon suggested the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid or a piece of space debris. The case was classified B (probably identified): the sighting took place during a period with many meteor showers, and the direction of the trajectory is consistent with a Perseid. GEIPAN concluded that it was probably an atmospheric re-entry and passed the file, for information, to meteorite specialists at the IMCCE and the Muséum National d'histoire naturelle.
