Sighting in Cavaillon, June 5, 1955

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on June 5, 1955 in Cavaillon (Vaucluse, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Three witnesses watched a fire-red luminous rectangle in the sky for about twenty seconds one evening, in the direction of the western part of the Luberon massif. At first it stayed motionless. It then moved very quickly toward the east, changing shape as it went: it looked like a half-moon, then like a ball. It then shrank and disappeared.

The investigation checked the Moon's position astronomically and ruled it out. The aircraft hypothesis was dropped. Because there was not enough information and nothing to corroborate the account, GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data).
