Sighting in Cazères, July 19, 2009

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 19, 2009 in Cazères (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Between 19 and 21 July 2009, a witness at home noticed luminous phenomena on several occasions, each time for a few seconds, and found them puzzling. They were luminous spheres that appeared at night, between 10:50 and 11:15 pm. They moved in a straight line without any sound being heard, then quickly faded and disappeared.

The witness later sent the GEIPAN photo montages illustrating these successive observations.

The investigation linked the described features, namely several lights and a straight trajectory, to those of sky lanterns. Releases of such lanterns had been very popular for some time and had been the subject of a news item on the GEIPAN website. The case was classified B: the observations were probably successive sightings of sky lanterns.
