Sighting in Cesson-Sévigné, May 17, 2008

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting on May 17, 2008 in Cesson-Sévigné (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

Two witnesses watched three luminous balls moving at low altitude under a cloudy sky for about forty minutes, between 22:35 and 23:15. The balls appeared to dance around one another, merging together and then splitting into more of them.

The investigation concluded that this was very probably a misidentification of light from a "Sky Rose" type searchlight projected onto the clouds. A very similar observation, made in the same direction from the D101 road between Servon-sur-Vilaine and Châteaugiron, had been reported the night before, and GEIPAN links the two cases. The case is classified B: probable projections of light, most likely from a commercial display.
