Sighting in Cesson-Sévigné, September 3, 2011

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting on September 3, 2011 in Cesson-Sévigné (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at about 11:15 or 11:30 pm, the witness and their spouse noticed several orange points of light moving silently in the sky above the south-western horizon. The observation lasted about two minutes. During that time, more orange points of light appeared and moved in the same way as the first ones.

The case had little strangeness, and the witness's particularly detailed questionnaire gave it very good consistency. GEIPAN concluded that the lights were most likely several Thai lanterns in the phase where their flame was going out. Once told of this hypothesis, the witness looked at photos and videos of such lanterns and recognised them perfectly as what they had seen. The case was classified A: identified object.
