Sighting in Ceyreste, August 31, 2014
Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on August 31, 2014 in Ceyreste (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was one or more satellites (class A).
What happened
The witness reported the sighting in April 2015, several months after it took place. During the night of 31 August 2014, between 3:00 and 5:30 a.m., they had been watching the sky with a friend and had seen various lights, including shooting stars and aircraft. Two things stood out in particular: a light moving along a sinusoidal path, and then a "flash".
The GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and low consistency, since the account came late, contained an error in the date, and gave only an imprecise time. The investigation concluded that the witness had mistaken one or more satellites for something unusual. The flash is typical of an Iridium flash, but because so much time had passed and the details were too vague, the specific satellite could not be identified. At first the witness did not recognise a satellite because of the wavy trajectory. When the GEIPAN contacted them later, they accepted that it was a satellite and that the oscillations were an optical illusion (nystagmus). The case was classified A: mistaken identification of a satellite.
