Sighting in Chanos-Curson, August 29, 2013
Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on August 29, 2013 in Chanos-Curson (Drôme, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an atmospheric optical phenomenon (halo, sun dog…) (class A).
What happened
Around 7:45 pm, a driver was surprised to notice two luminous phenomena very close to the setting sun. They stopped to photograph them and ended up with five usable pictures. The account was precise and highly consistent.
The GEIPAN investigation relied on several points: the appearance and colour of the phenomena, the sun sitting low on the horizon with the two lights at the same height as it, and the presence of clouds suited to the formation of a sundog (parhelion). It concluded that the witness had very almost certainly seen a parhelion. The objects were easy to explain and their presence could be demonstrated, so the sighting was ultimately not very strange. The case was classified A, a certain observation of a parhelion.
