Sighting in Châteauneuf-du-Faou, August 11, 2013

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on August 11, 2013 in Châteauneuf-du-Faou (Finistère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Around midnight, under a clear sky, a witness noticed several orange objects that stood out clearly from the stars. They drifted slowly toward the east-south-east, and the witness took several photographs of them.

The investigation found that the description fitted Thai lanterns very well. These are fairly common on summer nights in urban areas: round, orange lights that fly steadily. The Quimper weather record showed a light westerly wind, broadly consistent with objects being carried east-south-east by the wind. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
