Sighting in Chatte, July 14, 2020

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 14, 2020 in Chatte (Isère, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At 6:55 p.m., a witness watched a white, triangular object for several tens of seconds. It moved quickly from the northeast to the southwest at high altitude and at a steady speed. The witness described it as an equilateral triangle with sharply defined edges, with one of its corners pointing forward. This was the only account collected, and there were no photos or videos, so the GEIPAN rated its consistency as medium.

The investigation found only one plausible explanation, an aeronautical one. According to the FlightRadar24 website, a Vueling A320 flying from Copenhagen to Barcelona was passing over the area at the time of the sighting, on a path similar to the one described. The aircraft was cruising and flew directly above the witness at high altitude. The witness had been surprised by the altitude and by the equilateral-triangle shape. The analysis concluded that the triangular shape was probably a misinterpretation of the silhouette of the fuselage and wings. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of an aircraft.
