Sighting in Chaulgnes, April 19, 2012
Nièvre, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France
Sighting on April 19, 2012 in Chaulgnes (Nièvre, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At around 10:40 p.m., a witness noticed a very bright point of light in the sky toward the north-northwest. It was stationary at first, then seemed to start moving. The witness later gave the direction of the sighting as west-northwest.
The investigation noted that this direction matches the position of the planet Venus, which was then 15° above the horizon. However, the movements the witness described are clearly inconsistent with that explanation. An aircraft was also considered, but this could not be checked because radar records could not be obtained in time.
Because the information was insufficient, GEIPAN classed the case as C. It regards the case as not very strange, but there was too little information to reach a conclusion.
