Sighting in Cherisy, May 31, 2015

Eure-et-Loir, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on May 31, 2015 in Cherisy (Eure-et-Loir, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Shortly after midnight, at 12:15 a.m., the witness noticed a point of light in the sky moving from south to north. Almost immediately, more lights appeared, white and red. There were more than a dozen of them, and they moved without making any sound. The witness described a triangular shape. No other testimony was collected.

GEIPAN considered that a series of red or white glowing shapes crossing the sky within a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggested Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The south-to-north direction of travel matched the south-to-north wind recorded at Évreux that day. The triangular shape could be that of the brightest part of a lantern, which looks roughly triangular in a photo attached to the case file. The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
