Sighting in Chevigny-Saint-Sauveur, February 11, 2016
Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France
Sighting on February 11, 2016 in Chevigny-Saint-Sauveur (Côte-d'Or, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).
What happened
At 9:06 p.m., a witness looking out of their living-room window noticed a strongly flickering orange light in the sky. They filmed it with a hand-held phone. Watching the footage afterwards, they saw what looked like a small white object circling the glowing ball at high speed. Their spouse was there and also saw the phenomenon, though only one account was collected. According to the witness, the light then disappeared.
The investigation rated the case's consistency as good: there were two witnesses, even though only one gave testimony, and there was a video. The landscape features, the dating, the viewing of the phenomenon and the presence of clouds all matched the account. The wind, at 6 km/h, was compatible with the release of a Thai lantern, and the light's disappearance fits with it drifting away on the wind. Its bright look, orange hue, position beneath the clouds (with no rain) and changes in brightness pointed to a flickering candle flame. A field suitable for a release lay 300 m away, in the witnesses' line of sight. Such releases are more common at weekends, yet this one took place on a Thursday; even so, the witness's statements support the lantern hypothesis.
The small white object seen when zooming in on the video was explained by a combination of the flickering flame, possible changes in focus and the shake of the hand-held phone. GEIPAN classified the case as A: a Thai lantern.
