Sighting in Chinon, July 10, 1993

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on July 10, 1993 in Chinon (Indre-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around one in the morning, a witness noticed a light with no definite shape rotating clockwise, accompanied by a faint humming sound. Puzzled, they went to fetch their friend, who also saw the phenomenon and then woke her mother, who was able to watch it too. The gendarmerie also located two other witnesses, who did not wish to give any account.

The phenomenon recurred roughly every 20 minutes. The witnesses stopped watching at 2:30 a.m., when they went to bed.

GEIPAN could not formally identify the phenomenon, but considered it probable that it was the laser beam of a nightclub about 10 km away. This conclusion rests on the cloud layer present that night and on the direction in which the beam was seen. The case is classed B (probably identified).
