Sighting in Colpo, July 19, 2022

Morbihan, Bretagne, France

Sighting on July 19, 2022 in Colpo (Morbihan, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the planet Jupiter (class A).

What happened

The witness was about to take their dog out. From the front step, they noticed an oval-shaped light in the direction of the Moon. It stayed motionless for at least five minutes, after which the witness stopped watching it. They took a photograph, and theirs is the only account collected.

Analysis of the photograph showed that the time the witness first gave was wrong: the sighting took place at 3:07 a.m., not at 11 p.m., which the witness later confirmed. In the image, the phenomenon does not look like a simple point but has a slightly elongated shape, which the witness compared to a "banana". This is consistent with slight motion blur, since the photo was taken hand-held.

The investigation concluded that the witness had seen the planet Jupiter, whose characteristics and position match exactly what was reported. The case has medium consistency, with one photo and a brief account. GEIPAN classified it A: observation of the planet Jupiter.
