Sighting in Corbeny, September 8, 1978
Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France
Sighting on September 8, 1978 in Corbeny (Aisne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).
What happened
At around 7:15 p.m., several people heard a whistling sound coming from the sky, followed by a loud noise. The sky was cloudy that day. A farmer later found that the roof of their barn had been damaged and came across pieces of whitish ice of various sizes.
The diameter and total weight of the block could not be determined, since it had broken into several fragments. Some witnesses took a few pieces, while the rest melted on the ground without leaving any particular trace. No similar event was reported in the area that day.
The GEIPAN classified the case as A: it was the fall of a block of ice, a rare phenomenon but one that is known in meteorology.
