Sighting in Coudekerque, April 21, 2011

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on April 21, 2011 in Coudekerque (Nord, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Several people noticed orange-coloured lights moving across the sky in the evening. They passed silently, in successive waves, and amounted to about ten points of light. Photographs were sent to the GEIPAN.

The investigation found that these images look like those from many other cases that turned out to be Chinese lanterns. Shifting winds were blowing that evening, which can account for the trajectory the witness described. No firm testimony confirms that lanterns were released, but the GEIPAN considers this explanation highly probable. The case was classified B, probably identified.
