Sighting in Coulaines, August 31, 1984

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on August 31, 1984 in Coulaines (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Between 9:00 and 9:15 p.m., two witnesses noticed a large, motionless white light just below the moon. They watched it for about ten minutes. During that time the light stretched until it looked like a rugby ball, then moved up above the moon and split into two clearly separate white lights. According to the witnesses, the two lights seemed to be joined by a compact mass.

They heard no noise and saw no trace of smoke. The phenomenon then vanished suddenly.

GEIPAN gathered no further information about the sighting. With insufficient data, the case is classed C: the investigation goes no further than describing a very bright white light moving across the sky.
