Sighting in Crampagna, June 9, 2013

Ariège, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 9, 2013 in Crampagna (Ariège, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At about 12:45 a.m., a witness noticed a very bright, orange-red object in the sky. It then moved from north to south and disappeared behind a hill. The sighting lasted four to five minutes, and the witness heard no particular noise.

The investigation linked this strong orange-red light, seen on a weekend evening and moving slowly, to a Thai lantern most likely released from Saint-Jean-de-Verges at the end of a party. Weather records from Saint-Girons showed a light, very unstable wind during the night. The wind at Crampagna could not be determined precisely, particularly because the area is low mountain terrain. GEIPAN classed the case as B: a probable Thai lantern sighting.
