Sighting in Crozon, December 27, 2016

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on December 27, 2016 in Crozon (Finistère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the star Sirius (class B).

What happened

On the evening of 27 December 2016, the witness was watching television and went upstairs to see what their son was doing. At the top of the stairs, they noticed through the window a light moving fairly quickly, which seemed to be heading toward Crozon. The witness called their son, who also saw the light. The witness went back down for a camera, returned upstairs and photographed the phenomenon through the window glass, taking 19 pictures between 23:44 and 00:59. Both then went to bed before the phenomenon had disappeared. Only one witness account was collected.

The investigation noted a clear inconsistency between the high speed described and an observation lasting more than an hour. It also noted that the witnesses went to bed before the phenomenon ended, which points to a low level of strangeness. The witness placed the light in the west-southwest; that evening, the star Sirius was clearly visible in that direction, with an apparent movement toward the west, toward Crozon. Because the photographs were taken through window panes and with a powerful zoom, this is enough to explain the "Z"-shaped movement visible in photo no. 3, and the different colors match the twinkling of Sirius. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the witness probably photographed Sirius.
