What happened
On a Saturday at around 10 p.m., several people in two different localities noticed an unusual phenomenon in the direction of the Pyrenees. Three witnesses reported what they had seen to the gendarmerie. All described a round, red, motionless point of light. Two placed it slightly to the right of Mont Valier, while the third placed it toward the Cagire. One witness took binoculars and made out five red-orange points of light inside the mass. The sighting lasted about ten minutes, then the light vanished within a few seconds. Two witnesses described it disappearing horizontally, one saying it sank into the Pyrenees range. The third described no movement but mentioned a forward tilt and the appearance of three beams of light.
GEIPAN re-examined the case, which had originally been rated D. It noted that one witness's account, which first saw the phenomenon "in the woods", was consistent with something located on the ground. Foreground reliefs in front of Mont Valier, at a similar angular height, could also have served as the reference for the other witnesses. The apparent recession could have been an illusion, and the third witness's account contained inconsistencies. The directions given did not match either, unless one witness had used a different landmark, which could be neither confirmed nor ruled out. A more thorough investigation at the time might have clarified these points, but that is no longer realistic years later. Nothing pointed to an aerospace phenomenon, so the case was classified C: unusable, as it goes beyond GEIPAN's own remit.
