Sighting in Dole, September 19, 2010

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on September 19, 2010 in Dole (Jura, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 4:30 pm, several people noticed between five and seven bright white points in the sky, which caught their curiosity. The objects drifted slowly toward the north-east, leaving no trail and making no audible sound. The sighting lasted about forty minutes, and photographs were taken while it went on.

Only one of the witnesses reported the event to GEIPAN, sending in the original photographs along with comments. At first there were two white points, then more, drifting fairly slowly, as if carried by the wind. This description, together with two of the pictures, most likely shows a flight of balloons. The witness had themselves suggested weather balloons. Since the sighting took place on a Sunday afternoon, small festive balloons could also be the explanation.

GEIPAN considered the strangeness level low and classified the case as B: it is very probably explained by a balloon flight.
