Sighting in Dole, July 29, 2021

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on July 29, 2021 in Dole (Jura, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At 11:07 pm, the witness was getting ready for bed. They opened the window to close the shutters and were startled by a dazzling light. They described a white line moving silently across the sky from the La Serre forest toward the south of the Chaux forest. The phenomenon was egg-shaped and moved at high speed, apparently at a constant altitude. The witness watched it for about 6 to 7 seconds. No other testimony was collected.

GEIPAN rated the consistency of the case as low: there was a single, brief account, with no sketch, photo or video. The description was nevertheless entirely typical of a fireball: a very bright object travelling in an extremely fast straight line for just a few seconds. Searches in fireball databases identified an atmospheric re-entry matching the phenomenon. This fireball had been observed from northern Italy, and its timing and trajectory matched the witness's account perfectly. The case was classified A: observation of a fireball.
