Sighting in Entremont-le-Vieux, December 12, 2024
Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on December 12, 2024 in Entremont-le-Vieux (Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a celestial body (star or planet) (class A).
What happened
On a clear, starry evening, the witness noticed a bright white streak for the first time, about 1.5 cm long on their screen or in their field of view (the source does not specify which). The phenomenon came back on every clear evening afterward. Gradually, a second and then a third streak appeared, seeming to be lined up and evenly spaced.
On 31 December at 7 a.m., from another spot in their house, the witness saw a bright streak at roughly 30° above the horizon. They took a photograph using their phone's zoom. To the naked eye only one streak was visible, but in the enlarged image the witness made out a shape suggesting a "craft". The investigation established that the photo was taken at 7:22 a.m. on 31 December, not on the 30th as stated in the technical questionnaire. The witness later sent GEIPAN a second photograph, taken on 13 January 2025 at 5:45 p.m.
GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and good consistency. The description is typical of an astronomical observation: return at the same times over several hours, visibility only in fine weather, very slow movement from east to west, and disappearance at daybreak. The photos show motion blur, which prevents assessing the true extent of the streak as perceived. Using data from the Stellarium software, the two photographed phenomena match the positions of Mars (31 December) and Jupiter (13 January), whose negative magnitudes make them very conspicuous. The case was classified A.
