Sighting on August 11, 1977 in Erstein (Bas-Rhin, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

A local newspaper article reported that a witness had spotted an unidentified flying object in the sky. The gendarmerie then looked for other people who might have seen it and found two witnesses. They said that at about 10:30 p.m. they had noticed a very bright object hanging motionless in the sky.

Through binoculars, they could make out spheres at its base giving off a yellow light, along with a kind of flashing red beacon. The object then moved slowly, with no sound heard, and disappeared.

The investigation concluded that the witnesses had probably seen a aircraft pass by, most likely a helicopter. The case is classified B (probably identified).
