Sighting in Évron, October 7, 2015

At around 8:20 pm, a resident saw a light with bluish reflections in the sky from their window. They saw it again five minutes later, as they were going to bed. They called their child over, and the two watched it for two to three minutes. The witness then phoned a sibling who lived in a hamlet in the neighbouring municipality to tell them about it, and picked up a camcorder to film the phenomenon.

Around 9:10 pm, the witness and their child set off for the sibling's home, arriving at about 9:15 pm. The sibling was waiting with a neighbour. As the witness got out of the car, they saw the phenomenon again, and all four people noticed another light above a local hill. The sibling and the neighbour then went back indoors. The witness and their child went on to see five more luminous phenomena above the hill. The camcorder would not work, and the observation ended at 9:25 pm. The witness reported what they had seen to the gendarmerie the next day. On 9 October at about 6:00 am, they saw two more lights and filmed them.

The witness supplied two videos: a 1 min 51 s summary of the 7 October observation, posted on YouTube on 10 October, and a 12 min 9 s file containing all the footage shot on the evening of 7 October and the morning of 9 October. The case was of medium strangeness. The videos make it possible to place each light against terrestrial landmarks, and the zoomed shots show other, fainter stars nearby. Checking with Stellarium identified every phenomenon with certainty: Arcturus, Vega, Capella, Aldebaran, Sirius, Jupiter and Regulus. GEIPAN classified the case as A, a definite misidentification of these astronomical objects.
