Sighting in Fère-en-Tardenois, June 1, 2014

Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on June 1, 2014 in Fère-en-Tardenois (Aisne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., a witness saw an object cross the sky silently and at very high speed. It appeared as three points of light. The witness was alone, so no other observer directly confirmed the account.

According to GEIPAN, this description is typical of a bolide, which leaves little doubt about the explanation. The strangeness and consistency of the case were rated as average, because there was only one witness. A meteor was recorded by a network of amateurs at a time close to that of the sighting, but its trajectory does not match the one described. In addition, an independent account published online closely resembles this observation, and another sighting took place within a few minutes of it in a different town in Ille-et-Vilaine, covered in a separate case file.

The case was classified B: it was probably the atmospheric entry of a meteor, a well-known astronomical phenomenon, mistaken for an unknown object.
