What happened
Between 24 and 28 January 1979, three witnesses saw unusual phenomena in the same area, in two separate episodes.
On 24 January, between 7:00 and 7:15 a.m., one witness saw an orange, cigar-shaped craft. It moved slowly from north to south, then suddenly rose straight up and vanished at very high speed, changing colour as it went. No naval air force military manoeuvres had been reported at that time of year, and no other witness account of this phenomenon was collected. Little information was available.
On 28 January, at about 10:15 p.m., two other people noticed lights: blue and white glows, along with a red dot according to one of the witnesses, appearing at regular intervals. The gendarmerie investigation established that these glows came from the navigation lights at the top of the masts of a German cargo ship anchored in a bay.
GEIPAN classified both of these different observations as category A (identified).
