Sighting in Fontaine-lès-Dijon, March 26, 2013

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on March 26, 2013 in Fontaine-lès-Dijon (Côte-d'Or, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At ten past midnight, a motorist noticed an orange point of light, surrounded by white points, moving quickly across the sky from east to west. Two people were present, but only one account was collected. The photographs that were taken could not be used.

At the request of GEIPAN, a radar reconstruction was carried out. It identified an aircraft flight whose route and timing matched the sighting. The account was nonetheless imprecise, and the witness had left a large share to personal interpretation. The investigation established that the witness's visual perception was not at issue; the difficulty lay in how they interpreted what they saw, shaped by surprise, tiredness and night driving.

The case showed little strangeness and low consistency. GEIPAN classified it B: a probable misidentification of an aircraft.
