Sighting in Fontanès, August 12, 2015

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 12, 2015 in Fontanès (Hérault, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Shortly before sunrise, at 6:38 a.m., the witness saw a series of luminous phenomena in the sky. In a phone conversation, they said their window faced exactly south-west (225°). The luminous circle they described looked about three times smaller than the Moon.

The investigation considered that the first sighting could be a flash from an Iridium satellite, meaning a reflection of sunlight off it. The other phenomena could be sunlight reflecting off aircraft, since the closeness of sunrise makes such effects likely. However, GEIPAN could not confirm this hypothesis: the account is complex and imprecise about the directions of observation, and the report came in too late for air traffic to be checked. No other witness account was gathered. The case is classified C, due to insufficient information.
