Sighting in Foucherans, September 1979

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting in September 1979 in Foucherans (Jura, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

One evening in September 1979, at about 6:30 p.m., a witness was alone outside their property when a light appeared on the horizon. It moved very slowly from south to north. Thinking it was an airliner, the witness kept their eyes on it the whole time.

The object came to a halt directly above the witness, who then saw a very bright sphere, metallic grey in colour. After about a minute stationary, it set off again in the opposite direction, reached the horizon within a few seconds and vanished for good. No particular noise was heard during the sighting.

The account was only given in October 2007, long after the events, and it contains little detail. GEIPAN was therefore unable to carry out a proper investigation that could confirm or rule out explanations such as an airliner turning or a balloon caught in wind shear. With insufficient data, the case was classified C.
