Sighting in Gahard, July 1, 2015

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting on July 1, 2015 in Gahard (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a train or group of satellites (class A).

What happened

Between midnight and 12:15 a.m., a witness saw a bright point of light cross a clear sky. About two seconds later, two more bright points passed by in turn. All three followed one another at the same speed and moved in exactly the same direction. The witness noticed no flickering and no particular sound. The points eventually became invisible because of the brightness of the Moon. The sighting lasted between 15 and 20 seconds. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN rated the case as having medium strangeness and medium consistency, since there was only one witness but the description was precise. The investigation concluded that the witness had mistaken a particular triplet of Chinese military satellites, Yaogan 20A, B and C, for something unusual. Brightness, trajectory and timing were all fully consistent with such a triplet. The case was therefore classified A: observation of a triplet of Yaogan 20A, B and C satellites.
