Sighting in Garein, April 7, 2010

Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on April 7, 2010 in Garein (Landes, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the planet Venus (class A).

What happened

A witness noticed a bright point of light in the sky on the evening of 7 April, and again on 9 April, between 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm. They filmed it with their camera, and in the footage the color of the point varied. The witness also recalled having seen the same phenomenon at the same time of year the previous year.

The investigation reconstructed the sky's configuration for those dates and times. The planet Venus, at magnitude -3.9 and therefore easily visible to the naked eye, was in the part of the sky where the witness was looking, at about 280° at 9:30 pm local time. The fact that the witness saw the point over several days in a row fits this explanation. The color changes were attributed to optical effects, meaning variations in brightness, that occurred while filming with the witness's camera. GEIPAN concluded that the observations were of Venus and classified the case A.
