Sighting in Générac, May 15, 2015
Gard, Occitanie, France
Sighting on May 15, 2015 in Générac (Gard, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At about 10 p.m., a driver and their passenger saw many passing white glows in the night sky, each with a faint veil trailing behind. They were on country roads, and the sighting lasted 7 minutes over roughly 8 kilometres of driving. The witness took the phenomenon for a bolide, a description the investigation considered inaccurate. Only one account was collected.
The sighting took place about an hour after sunset, in the last light of dusk, just 10 km from the Camargue ponds and their thousands of large birds. It was the end of the evening flight, when the last birds leave the ponds to reach their roosts inland. The witnesses had thought of birds but dismissed the idea, assuming that would mean nocturnal birds. According to GEIPAN, that was probably not the case, especially given the number of passes.
However, GEIPAN gathered no concrete evidence to confirm the bird hypothesis, and the witnesses' description remained very brief (a white glow with a faint veil behind it). For lack of cross-checking, the case was classified C, insufficient data.
